ICT, Health and Wellbeing and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Communities
When I’m not writing or making films I work as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives, Victoria University. My current research explores researches how culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities use information communication technology (ICT) for more effective health and wellbeing communication with these groups.
Creative Writing
I integrate my media work and creative writing with academic research. My PhD thesis was a creative doctorate at Deakin University that was made up of a young adult novel and exegesis (kind of like a long essay). The stories I’ve had published in newspapers and online are part of my attempt to use humour, pop culture and the techniques of fiction writing in genres of non-fiction. I enjoy playing with subjective narrative points of view in conventional forms of journalism. My short fiction is often about the intersection between fantasy and reality, and the ways in which the absurd unsettles the seemingly normal, everyday lives of my characters. But I also like writing about whatever I think is cool – like zombies, evil clones, giant rats and dodgy inter-stellar time travelling devices…
Indie Aussie Shorts
I love making short films, and ever since my first script class at university, I’ve been addicted to the process of turning words into movies. I have three short films I’ve either written, produced and/or directed. I spoke about writing for short film production at the 2009 Australian Association of Writing Programs (AAWP) annual conference in New Zealand. I’m currently writing an academic article based on this presentation that explores how Foucault’s ideas relate to the institutionalisation of script writing to help create alternative ways of imagining and writing for short film production.
